Lake Center Elementary School serves 575 students from Kindergarten through fifth grade. The educational needs of the students at Lake Center Elementary are cared for by a total of 54 full and part time faculty and staff. Lake Center Elementary students are served by 24 K-5 classroom teachers, a reading consultant, media specialist, physical education teacher, music teacher, art teacher, two special education teachers and our paraprofessionals.
All students are engaged in the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) Model through WIN (What I Need) Time ranging from 4-5 days a week for 30-45 minutes in both reading and mathematics. During this time frame, tier 1 interventions are put into place focusing on the needs of students based on teacher data collected. These groups are flexible and are reviewed by grade level PLC (Professional Learning Communities) on a weekly basis. If it is found that a student or students are in need of additional interventions then teachers will work together to develop another layer of intervention to meet the students' needs. This is a tier 2 intervention. This model of intervention has served to provide a variety of interventions and challenges to students at all instructional levels meeting their individual needs.
The core curriculum at Lake Center provides learning experiences in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, health, arts education, physical education, and technology. The K-12 curricular and instructional programs for the Portage Public Schools are developed on a district-wide basis by K-12 Curriculum Development Teams and are implemented and sequenced within the building to endure both the horizontal and vertical cross-district alignment of curriculum and instruction.
The Houghton Mifflin Journeys basal series along with children’s literature and non-fiction comprise our reading program. Phonics lessons are also part of the reading program in grades K-2. We continue to implement a "hands on" science program at Lake Center Elementary to more directly address the needs of our children in the areas of science education.
Curriculum modules in mathematics are marked by in-depth focus on fewer topics. They integrate the CCLS, rigorous classroom reasoning, extended classroom time devoted to practice and reflection through extensive problem sets, and high expectations for mastery. The time required to complete a curriculum module will depend on the scope and difficulty of the mathematical content that is the focus of the module (first priority cluster area for a given grade level). For example, the curriculum module relating to Grade 3 multiplication and division introduces initial ideas of multiplication and division in a brief period at the start of the year, continues to develop strategies and problem solving throughout the year, and includes materials to be used throughout the year for helping students reach fluency by the end of the year with single-digit multiplication and related division.

The following programs have been implemented to enhance the core curriculum:
Young Five's: an alternative program for children who are eligible for Kindergarten but need need the benefit of more time and experience to secure success in Kindergarten and beyond.
WIN (What I Need) Time: a program initiated at Lake Center that provides small, flexible-group reading and math instruction for all students, K-5, based on their needs as determined by data collected by teachers and analyzed as a grade level PLC (Professional Learning Community).
At-Risk: a federally-funded program where students are assessed for achievement in the core curriculum. At-Risk funds provide support for those students needing remediation based on select criteria during WIN time.
ELL (English Language Learners): a program offered to our students who meet the following criteria: 1. the student's native tongue is a language other than English and is a language other than English spoken in the student's home environment. 2. If yes, then he or she will take the WiDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) assessment. If the student shows a deficiency in the areas tested on the assessment, we will provide additional support as needed to the student.
E2 (Enrichment Program): academically advanced, gifted and talented students, grades 3,4,5 are offered E2 in a one-day per week pull out class at the E2 center which is located in the Portage Public Schools administration building
Art: Students study artists, art elements, materials and techniques, and arts of other cultures. Students create two and three dimensional projects using a variety of mediums, which are then displayed throughout the school and community
Music: Students experience music through singing, playing musical instruments, movement, games, and listening. Performance opportunities include concerts, musicals, and a fifth grade choir.
Physical Education: Our physical education program offers a variety of innovative activities related to health-related fitness and sport skill development. The curriculum aligns with current state and national content standards.
Spanish: All 5th grade students receive 48 minutes of Spanish instruction per week.
Special Education Services
Computer Lab: A 30 station computer lab where students receive instruction in keyboarding, and in productivity and curriculum-related software.
Classroom Technology: All classrooms have a TV, DVD, telephone, document cameras, and a networked computer.
Networking: A Local Area Network(LAN) connects all classroom, office, lab and media center computers for video, voice and data. A Wide Area Network (WAN) connects Lake Center's computers to the internet, to the entire school district and to the world.
